Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Africa

AWIN is dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) across Africa, ensuring that individuals have access to comprehensive, rights-based healthcare and information to make informed decisions about their bodies, relationships, and futures. We endeavor to promote SRHR as a fundamental human right and build a future where everyone can access the care and information they need to thrive.

SRHR is fundamental to gender equality, social justice, and sustainable development, yet millions of people across the continent continue to face barriers to accessing essential services and information.

In many parts of Africa, stigma, discrimination, and restrictive policies limit access to SRHR services, particularly for marginalized populations, including women and girls, adolescents, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people living with HIV/AIDS. These barriers not only undermine individuals' health and well-being but also perpetuate cycles of poverty, inequality, and gender-based violence.

Our organization works to address these challenges through the following strategies:

Capacity Building

We build the capacity of our members who represent healthcare providers, advocates, activists, collectives , educators, and civil society organizations to deliver high-quality SRHR services and challenge stigma and discrimination and advocate for policies that promote gender equal SRHR. Our training programs focus on evidence-based practices, human rights principles, and gender-sensitive approaches to ensure that SRHR services are accessible, equitable, and inclusive for all. Our members engage diverse stakeholders, including youth, parents, religious leaders, and policymakers, to foster dialogue, empower communities, and drive positive social change.

Evidence-Based Advocacy and Policy Change

We advocate for the adoption and implementation of laws and policies that protect and promote SRHR, including laws that guarantee access to contraception, safe abortion, and comprehensive sexuality education. We work with governments, regional bodies, and international partners to strengthen health systems, improve service delivery, and uphold the rights of all individuals to make decisions about their bodies and lives.

By advancing SRHR, we can empower individuals, families, and communities to lead healthy, fulfilling lives and contribute to the development and prosperity of Africa.
